Dealing with the change and loss of divorce or family realignment can be a tremendous emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual challenge. At times the level of conflict can feel overwhelming and can create an out of control escalation of blaming, anger and revenge. All are hurt in this process but most vulnerable are the kids. Our family services are designed to create various levels of conflict resolution support throughout the process of family change and re-definition.
At the simplest level, mediation means practicing communication at its best. The goal is to find shared solutions to the conflicts that are obstacles to success and happiness for you and your family.   “Communication at its best” is both standing up for what you want, need or believe, and working to understand others’ point of view. The goal of “shared solutions” can be achieved through creative thinking, commitment to “win-win” outcomes and hard work. Whether dealing with the on-going challenges of family life or making the adjustment to a “two-household” family schedule, mediation can be a valuable strategy for helping parents to create safe, predictable, guilt and anger free environments for kids to grow up in.
The role of a Parenting Coordinator is to provide on-going mediation, education and advocacy in parenting relationships that are characterized by consistently high conflict.  The aim of Parenting Coordination is to help divorced or separating parents with redefinition of their relationship in such a way that separation, loss, sadness or anger does not permanently influence their children's lives and their role as parents.  Dealing with this transition is a challenging learning process but can create lasting rewards for you and your children.
A Child and Family investigation is usually ordered by Domestic Courts when parents are unable to agree on issues of parenting time and decision making. It is generally an extensive process that focuses on providing recommendations to parents and the court that serve "the best interests of the child".

Fairview is the business name for the mediation and forensic services (related to the legal system) provided by Dr. Steve Shaver for families in the Denver Metro area and the Western Slope of Colorado.  Fairview is a mountain peak at the head of the Quartz Creek Valley near my home in Gunnison and it seemed like the perfect name for a professional organization dedicated to impartial, honest, objective, fact finding and conflict resolution services. I am a School Psychologist and candidate for Psychologist licensure with 30 years of experience working with children and families and have specialized training in Mediation, Parenting Coordination and Child and Family Investigation. My primary commitment is to the best interests of children and their families. Please call or e-mail if you have questions or would like to meet for a free initial consultation.
