Where did we start?

Our club started before 1900 as a study club.  Meetings were held in member's homes at first and were later held in the town's library (now the museum).  Membership was limited so there was a waiting list of ladies who waited for the honor of becoming a member.

The women who founded the Farwell Club would surely be proud of the fact that the area women have, for over a century, continued and broadened the goals and ideals they aspired to for the community.  The importance of improving as individuals and of being a community service organization remains the intent of our members.

A big change that has occurred since the early days of the club is that the members now come from several communities surrounding Farwell instead of just from the close proximity of the village.  We have recently changed our name to GFWC Farwell Area Women's Club to indicate this broadened area.

The General Federation of Women's Clubs, to which we are affiliated, offers scholarship opportunities and resource material designed to improve the lives of individual women and of the country in general.  Our club is a small part of a whole organization, which has had the clout to change laws, and institutions to better the rights of women and children.
